*The Union of Schools and Centres for Quran Memorization in the Republic of Mali hosts a National Day in honour of the Qur’an memorizers, under the direction of His Excellency, the Minister of Religious Affairs, Worship and Cultures in Mali.*
On Sunday, January 21, 2024, numerous individuals from all over the Republic of Mali flocked to the Mars 26 Field for the National Day programme in honour of the Memorizers of the Glorious Qur’an, which was organised by *the Union of Schools and Centres for Qur’an Memorization in the Republic of Mali under the leadership of His Excellency, the Minister of Religious Affairs, Worship and Cultures in Mali* accompanied with the presence of distinguished guests from Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Conakry, Mauritania, and members of the Union of African Muslim Scholars who were selected to serve on the panel of judges for the final competition preceded by the first national competition in honour of the Memorizers of the Glorious Qur’an in Mali, and for it to culminate in celebrating the best top five participants named “The Stars of the Glorious Qur’an” while Dr Abubakr Siko Fufnaa of the Guinea-Conakry served as the head of the judicial panel.
Among the 270 schools and Centres for the Memorization of the Glorious Qur’an that participated in the competition, it is noteworthy that the Republic of Mali produced the overall top five winners.
In the order of the programme, the event commenced with a recitation by Ahmad Būnī, a younger memorizer who was eleven years old – according to the Union of Centres.
Dr Uthman Salih Tarawuriy, the president of the Union of Schools and Centres for Quran Memorization in the Republic of Mali and a member of the Media and Public Relations Committee of the Management Office, Union of African Muslim Scholars, predicted in his speech that, with God’s grace, Mali will produce millions of male and female Qur’anic memorizers before the year 2050.
The presence of notable members of Union of African Muslim Scholars from the headquarter and other neighbouring countries made the event unique. Many distinguished personalities and great individuals from local, national, and international associations, bodies, and organisations of the country are in attendance at the event.
Notable among them are: the Minister of Religious Affairs, Worship and Cultures, Dr Muhammad Umar Kawniy; the General Secretary, Union of African Muslim Scholars, Dr Saeed Muhammad Baba Silaa; the Chief Executive Officer, Dr Umar Bamba; Shaykh Dr Ibrahim Kunta; Assistant General Secretary for Financial Affairs and Director General for Al-Fāruq Organisation; First Vice President of the Islamic Supreme Council in Mali and numerous members of the Union of African Muslim Scholars from the headquarters and other Government Officials.
The programme featured speeches by the Fatwa and Guidance Committee from the Management Office of the Union of African Muslim Scholars, and the president of the League of Du’āt in Mali, Shaykh Muhammad Tarāwuriy—may God grant him continued health and safety— delivered a thought-provoking and inspirational speech highlighting the significance of organising Qur’an competitions, inspiring the memorizers of the Glorious Qur’an, and emphasising their values in any given society.
In this National Day Competition, approximately 5,000 male and female Qur’anic memorizers were honoured. Three participants ultimately emerged as the winners and were bestowed with the honorific title “The Stars of the Glorious Qur’an”. Following is the highlight of the winners’ names:
1. First National Winner: *As-Shaykh AbūBakr Muhammad Haydar* from *Haqq At-Tilāwah Centre, Bamako, the Capital of Mali.*
2. Second National Winner: *Ash-Shaykh Muhammad Muhammad Suwāni* from *Dāru’l-Qurān wa’l-Hadīth, Touba, Mali.*
3. Third National Winner: *Muhammad AbdulQadir Kuwayta* from *Bilāl bn Abī Rabāh Centre, Bamako, the Capital of Mali.*
